Hello readers,
A very warm thanks to everybody who have spent their valuable time in reading our blog. And we assure you that we keep you all filled with more and more good information.
Today we are about to know something about the World's Fastest Supercomputer.
Before getting deep into the topic, let us first know the basics of computers.
Computers are of 4 types:
- Supercomputers
- Mainframe Computers
- Minicomputers
- Microcomputers
“Just my luck. The first colleague I'd befriended at the agency and it was an alcoholic supercomputer.”
What is a Supercomputer?
_____
A supercomputer is a computer with a high level of performance as compared to a general-purpose computer. The performance of a supercomputer is commonly measured in floating-point operations(Flops) per second instead of million instructions per second.
How are Supercomputers useful?
_____
Supercomputers play an important role in the field of computational science and are used for a wide range of computationally intensive tasks in various fields, including quantum mechanics, weather forecasting, climate research, oil and gas exploration, molecular modeling.
Previously, the World's Fastest Supercomputer was Sunway TaihuLight.
Now comes the question. What is the current World's Fastest Supercomputer?
Currently, the World's Fastest and Powerful Supercomputer is Summit
Summit or OLCF-4 is a supercomputer developed by IBM for use at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which as of November 2019 is the fastest supercomputer in the world, capable of 200 petaFLOPS.
As of November 2019, the supercomputer is also the 5th most energy-efficient in the world. The United States Department of Energy awarded a $325 million contract in November 2014 to IBM, Nvidia, and Mellanox.
The effort resulted in the construction of Summit and Sierra
Summit is tasked with civilian scientific research and is located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
What are the uses of Summit?
_____
The Summit supercomputer provides scientists and researchers the opportunity to solve complex tasks in the fields of energy, artificial intelligence, human health, and other research areas.
Design of Summit:
_____
- Each one of its 4,608 nodes (2 IBM POWER9 CPUs and 6 Nvidia Tesla GPUs / node[16]) has over 600 GB of coherent memory.
- IT has nearly 800 GB of RAM.
- The Internet bandwidth of the summit supercomputer is 200gbps, where the normal computer has only 40gbps which means the internet will be 5x faster than the normal computer.
_____
$200 million(15,17,25,00,000 RUPEES).
Roughly 1500CR.
Interesting Facts about Supercomputers:
_____
- Out of the Top 5 Supercomputers in the world, 3 are owned by the USA, and the others are owned by China.
- As of January 2018, Pratyush and Mihir are the fastest supercomputers in India with a maximum speed of 6.8 PetaFlops at a total cost of INR 438.9 Crore.
